Summer Meet Playlist & Recorded Samples

Plan now to attend the 2024 Windjammers summer convention, dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and performance of traditional circus music as it was heard under the big top during the golden years of the traveling extravaganzas.

Windjammers from across the country will gather in the Iowa-Illinois Quad Cities to read through the challenging and exciting music that accompanied jugglers, trapeze artists, clowns, and elephants.  Here are the special features of this year’s event:

  • The Windjammer Band will read through unpublished marches by J.J. Richards, Russell Alexander, Fred Jewell, and Hale Vandercook. (And yes, they are GOOD!) Also, Iowa and Illinois circus composers will be highlighted.
Windjammers United Concert Band, Baraboo, WI
  • Clinicians will include Andy Glover, President of the C.L. Barnhouse Company, and Nancy Olson, Curator of the Karl King Library. Directors from around the nation will demonstrate how circus music can motivate and inspire young musicians.
  • The Windjammer Band will combine with local Quad Cities bands to present monster circus concerts on Thursday and Friday evenings of that week! This will culminate in a Saturday morning, multi-media Young Peoples Concert at Davenport’s famous Adler Theater.

Regional band directors are invited to sit in with the Windjammer Band for the entire week with no registration fee required! Iowa license renewal credit is available for Iowa educators for just $35. Additionally, advanced high school and college band students are invited to sit in with the Windjammer Band for the Saturday morning Young People’s Concert. (There will be a rehearsal the preceding Friday afternoon.) The registration fee for each student is $10 in advance.

Windjammers members may register below when registration opens. Iowa educators who need more information about credits should contact convention chairperson Jay Kahn at windjammers2024@gmail.com.

Hotel reservations should be made directly with the hotel.  Use the special weblink below for the special Windjammers convention rate.
